Chapter 14
Lucas
God, I wanted her. Seeing her in my jersey had me wanting to puff out my chest and howl. In the short amount of time Iâve known her, she had already gotten under my skin. The woman reminded me of my sophomore year on the varsity football team, and the senior captain of the cheerleaders kissed me during one of those dumb party games. I think it was seven minutes in heaven or something. All I knew was, thanks to my nerves, it took much less than seven minutes to tickle the pearly gates. A bit embarrassing, but I was a kid.
Like then, I was nervous. Harley wasnât like any other woman Iâd been with. That was clearly established. Therefore, I didnât want to treat her as such. She had to know she was special. That still didnât mean I didnât want her naked in my bed, because Iâd need to be either gay or dead to not want that.
We walked into my house, and Harley set her purse on the side table. She glanced around and smiled. âPretty home.â
âThank you.â I shed my suit jacket and tie, and set them on a chair, before unbuttoning the two top buttons of my dress shirt.
âDid you decorate it yourself?â she asked, slowly strolling through my foyer and into my living room. Harley glanced back and watched me turn the cuffs of my sleeves up, looking completely enraptured by the movement.
She turned and ran her hand along the top of my black microfiber plush sofa, leaving a slight trail from where the tip of her fingers were.
Following her, I shoved my hands into my pockets for fear Iâd reach out, grab her, and ravish her body the way Iâd been thinking for the past couple of hours. Except, I wanted to savor her. To show her how I really felt about her. Donât get me wrong, I wasnât ready to declare love, but, if not today, I could possibly see it happening.
Iâd never been a believer in love at first sight. Lust, yes, most certainly, but love? Nope, I didnât buy it. Iâd heard stories about Trent and Reese. According to him, he loved her from the time he laid eyes on her. Reese on the other hand didnât care for him.
âNo, I didnât. I got lucky, and the person I bought this home from was an interior designer. Aside from a few pieces of furniture, like the sofa and my bedroom, I purchased most of the furnishings that were already here.â
âVery nice.â Harley walked toward the natural wood mantel on my stone fireplace. She reached and picked up a framed picture of me and my mom when I graduated from eighth grade and moved up to high school. I looked like a dork in my yellow cap and gown, but Mom looked beautiful. It was my last graduation she had been alive for.
Sheâd been so happy that day. Looking at that picture, the pride was evident on her face. It was truly a shame she passed away so early into her life⦠and ours.
